HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team will travel to Lafayette, La. Tuesday to compete against No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette in a single mid-week game at 6 p.m. A doubleheader was originally scheduled, but only one game will be played.
The Cougars (23-21) enter the game after winning the conference series against Southern Miss, 2-1, including run-ruling the final game of the series, 12-3.
After registering a 12-for-16 week, senior Jessica Valis, was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week, which was announced on Monday. The shortstop now tops the Cougars with her .338 batting average. She has five doubles, four triples and 50 hits this season.
Senior Katie Bush and senior Elaina Nordstrom are tied with their batting average of .333. Bush is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak.
Sophomore Baillie Lott pitched in all five games this week and moved to 14-9 after the 4-1 week the Cougars had. She pitched her first career no-hitter against Texas Southern last Tuesday.
No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette (35-10) enters the game after sweeping conference opponent North Texas, while run-ruling two of the games.
The Ragin' Cajuns are led by Karli Hubbard with a batting average of .462, including five doubles, two triples and 67 hits.
Katie Smith has a .408 batting average and 40 hits. Donna Bourgeois, who has an ERA of 1.07, has a 25-7 record and has struck out 243 batters this season. She has pitched 189.10 innings this season.
Louisiana-Lafayette leads the all-time series 3-9, with three of their wins coming from last season. In 2008, Houston split a mid-week regular season doubleheader with the Ragin' Cajuns and then went 1-2 against them during the Super Regionals.
