Baseball Takes Game Two Against Marshall, 12-4

Charleston, W. Va. - The University of Houston baseball team combined for 12 run and 14 hits to defeated Marshall 12-4 on Saturday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park to take a 2-0 series lead.
With the win over the Thundering Herd, Houston takes the series win and has now won six straight against Marshall.
For the second consecutive game UH got another solid performance out of their pitching staff. Michael Goodnight earned the start pitching four innings, allowing six hits, two runs and six strikeouts. Chase Dempsay and Donnie Joseph combined to pitch the final five innings, allowing six hits, no runs with one strikeout.
Houston worked themselves into a jam in their first at bat but was able to come away with a run. With two outs, Dempsay put a runner on base with a walk. Caleb Ramsey followed that up with a bunt single but moved to second on a throwing error by Marshall pitcher Greg Williams, while moving Dempsay to third. Dempsay would then score the Cougars first run on a Marshall passed ball.
The next two innings were scoreless for both teams before Marshall evened the score with a single run. Houston answered in the top of the fifth with a three run spot. Jake Runte singled to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt off Taylor White and scored on a Blake Kelso single. Kelso stole second and Zak Presley put a second runner on base, reaching on a fielding error by the left fielder. Dempsay loaded the bases with a walk and Caleb Ramsey plated Presley and Kelso on an error by the center fielder.
Marshall cut the lead to two in the fifth, scoring a run in the bottom of the inning but the deficit would increase once again as the Cougars put together a four-run sixth inning. David Murphy led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Runte followed that up with a bunt but was thrown out at second on a Kelso fielder's choice, however Jimmy Raviele scored on the play after coming in to pinch run for Murphy. After Runte was thrown out at home, Houston would score their final three runs with two outs on the board. With Kelso the lone base runner, Presley joined him after being hit by pitch and the duo stole third and second, respectively. Dempsay loaded the bases on a walk and Kelso would score on a wild pitch with Ramsey at the plate. Ramsey would then score Dempsay and Presley with a single through the right side.
The Thundering Herd scored one of their final two runs in the bottom of the inning to trail five, 8-3.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Houston wrapped up the game with four more runs in the eighth. Ramsey and Wallace opened the inning with back-to-back singles and William Kankel loaded the bases with a walk. The trio wouldn't stay on base long as Ty Stuckey singled and advanced to third on error by the Marshall right fielder, scoring all three runs. Stuckey would score in the next at bat off a single from Runte to cap the scoring for the Cougars. Marshall would be able to score a single run in the bottom of the inning but it wouldn't be enough for the win.
Houston now stands at 19-23 on the season and 9-5 in league play.
LOOKING AHEAD
Houston will look to for the series sweep against Marshall at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Following the weekend series, the Cougars will travel to McNeese State for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday before returning to Cougar Field to host cross-town rival Rice on May 1-3.
