Baseball Can't Get Past Lamar, Fall 12-3

HOUSTON -The University of Houston baseball team lost their second game in as many days Wednesday night, 12-3, to Lamar at Cougar Field.
With the loss Houston falls to 17-23 on the season and 1-1 against the Cardinals.
For the second consecutive game, the Cougars gave up a home run in the first inning. Against the Cardinals, Brian Taylor hit a two-run home run to left center scoring the leadoff batter, Tyler Link, who reached base on a single to center field. Ty Stuckey would strike out the next two batters, before giving up a walk and ending the inning with his third strikeout.
Lamar added to their total in the third inning, posting four runs, while adding a single run in the fourth.
The Cougars finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when William Kankel led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. He would go on to score on a sacrifice fly to left field from Chris Wallace.
Wallace followed up his sacrifice fly, hitting his team-leading seventh home run in the sixth inning.
Houston would give up three more runs to the Cardinals in the ninth inning before scoring a final run in their last at bat. Kankel plated Taylor White on a single to left field after White led off the inning with a walk.
Despite the loss, two Houston pitchers tied career-highs in strikeouts. In relief, William Kankel came in to pitch 3.2 innings, while striking out a career-high tying six batters. Kankel also had six strikeouts against Lamar on March 17 in a 4-2 win. In addition, Jimmy Raviele tied his career high with three Ks, after entering the game in the seventh inning. Stuckey made his third start this season, going 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, six runs and three strikeouts.
LOOKING AHEAD
Houston will travel to Charleston, W. Va., for a three-game series against Marshall this weekend at Appalachian Power Park. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. The series will continue at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
