HOUSTON--Sophomore Baillie Lott pitched the University of Houston softball team's first no-hitter this season in game two of the doubleheader against Texas Southern for a 9-0 shutout after winning game one, 9-1. Houston moves to 21-20 overall this season.
Senior Jessica Valis went 5-for-6, stole two bases and had a total of three RBI in both games. Sophomore Katy Beth Sherman went 4-for-4 in the doubleheader.
With the two wins, Lott improved to 12-8. She struck out four batters and walked two in each game. She allowed only three hits in the first game, and the no-hitter in the second game was the Cougars first this season.
GAME ONE: HOUSTON 9, TEXAS SOUTHERN 1
The Cougars put one run on the board early in the bottom of the first inning when senior Katie Bush scored on a single by senior Haley Valis.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars continued to hit and scored four more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Sherman hit her third double this season and eventually scored on a single by senior Jessica Valis. Wagner hit a three-run home run, her eighth this season, to add three more runs in the inning.
Texas Southern was able to put a run on the board in the top of the third as Latrece Shello, who reached base on a bunt, scored on an error by Jessica Valis. It would be the only run the Tigers would score in the game.
The Cougars added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 9-1 advantage, and with no runs scored by the Tigers, the game would end because of the mercy rule.
Jessica Valis went 3-for-3, scoring two runs and knocking in two runs, while Sherman went 2-for-2 scoring two runs.
GAME TWO: HOUSTON 9, TEXAS SOUTHERN 0
The Cougars put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, starting with back-to-back singles from Jessica Valis and Bush. Jessica Valis would then score on a SAC fly by Raley and Bush would score on a fielder's choice by Wagner. During the inning, freshman Melissa Gregson hit her first career triple, but was left on base after Haley Valis grounded out to third base.
Houston added seven runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning with everyone in the lineup making an appearance at the plate. The Tigers had two errors during the inning. Spittler hit her first double this season, while knocking in three runs.
Neither team would score again in the game and once again the game would end in the fifth inning because of the run-rule.
Lott pitched her first career no-hitter, striking out four and walking two. Jessica Valis went 2-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored. Bush, who went 2-for-3, scored two runs and had one RBI.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to compete against Conference USA rival, Southern Miss in a three game series beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m. The second game is slated to start at 3 p.m. and the final game of the series will start at noon on Sunday.
