HOUSTON - After winning the series, 2-1, against Memphis over the weekend, the University of Houston baseball team will host familiar opponents this week in Stephen F. Austin and Lamar before traveling to Marshall for a weekend series.
The Cougars open the week against SFA on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting between the two teams will be the second of the season. UH earned the 7-2 win at Jaycees Field on a four run first inning on Feb. 24.
SFA was only able to muster up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning and again put runners in scoring position in the ninth but UH held onto the lead.
The Lumberjacks are 15-23 on the season after losing a doubleheader Sunday against McNeese State.
The Cougars will face Lamar, Wednesday, in a game slated for 6:30 p.m. Lamar makes the short trip to Cougar Field after being upset by UTSA 7-6 in a 10-inning game on Sunday. The Cardinals fell to a 24-17 record on the season.
The last time the two teams met, Houston edged the then-No. 29 Cardinals 4-2 at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont on a standout performance by pitcher Donnie Joseph. He pitched a career-high 6.1 innings and striking out a career-high seven batters while giving up just two hits.
Following the two-game home stint, the Cougars travel to conference foe Marshall. Following their series against Rice over the weekend, the Thundering Herd is 16-22 on the season and 6-9 in Conference USA competition.
Marshall visits Ohio and Moorehead State in midweek match-ups.
UH swept Marshall last season to close the regular season and improve to an all-time record of 8-2 against the Herd. The Cougars later defeated Marshall 3-2 in the C-USA Championship game.
