GAME TWO RECAP- Houston 4, Southern Miss 3
After dropping the second game of the series, the Cougars scored a run in their opening at bat for the first time in the series. Blake Kelso led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a ground out to first base from Zak Presley. He eventually scored on a single to left center off Caleb Ramsey.
The Cougars followed that up with a two spot in the second inning. Taylor White and William Kankel both led off with singles and Matt Murphy added to the trend with a third-straight single, plating White. After Jake Runte fouled out to the catcher, Kelso recorded his second hit of the night with a single through the middle, scoring Kankel.
The Golden Eagles would pull within one run, plating one batter in both the third and fourth innings but Houston took a two run lead in the sixth scoring a single run. With two outs, Caleb Ramsey singled to left field scoring Runte who led off with a walk.
Southern Miss would score the final run of the series in the seventh inning but it wouldn't be enough to take the lead as the Cougars took the series finale with a score of 4-3.
Wes Musick recorded the Cougars win on the mound. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and three strikeouts. Donnie Joseph picked up his fourth save of the year, pitching the final 2.1 innings of the game, giving up two hits, no runs and striking out three batters.
Kelso finished the game going 5-for-5 at the plate with one run and one RBI.
GAME ONE RECAP- Southern Miss 3, Houston 1
After dropping the series opener on Friday night, Houston looked to even the score with Southern Miss in the first game of the doubleheader but for the second consecutive game, Southern Miss scored in their opening at bat. The Golden Eagles scored two runs after Brian Dozier started things off for the Golden Eagles with a single up the middle. The next two batters would load the bases on walks and Dozier and James Ewing would go on to score off a Joey Archer single to center field.
They followed that up with a single run in the third. Dozier once again scored for the Golden Eagles after reaching base on single.
Houston was nearly shutout for the first time this season but in the bottom of the ninth the Cougars put together a little rally that scored William Kankel who reached base on a wild pitch. UH looked as though they might even the score with Southern Miss in their final at bat, loading the bases with two outs but the rally would fall short when Kelso flied out to right field to end the game.
Michael Goodnight pitched the opening five innings of the game for Houston giving up nine hits, three runs and striking out four batters. Jared Ray came in relief to close out the game, not allowing a hit or run to the Golden Eagles, while striking out five batters.
