MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The University of Houston softball team lost both games of the doubleheader, Friday against Memphis, dropping to 18-18 overall and 7-6 in Conference USA.
Houston lost game two of the doubleheader against Memphis, 11-3, only playing five innings due to the mercy-rule. The Cougars have not been run-ruled since May 20, 2007, when they played then-No. 7 Texas A&M in the College Station Regional. This was also the first doubleheader the Cougars lost since Feb. 27, 2008, which was against Texas A&M.
With the two losses, the Cougars' five-game winning-streak was snapped. Houston has yet to win an away conference series, but is 5-0 in C-USA at home.
In the first game, the Cougars scored three runs in the second and third inning with a solo home run by senior Laurie Wagner and a two-run single by senior Elaina Nordstrom.
The Tigers (18-21, C-USA 4-10) would score in every inning but the first, with five runs being scored off home runs.
Houston left four runners on base, committed three errors and had a total of five hits. Junior Lindsey Olson dropped to 2-2 with three strikeouts and had a career game-high seven walks.
In the first game, Houston put up an early 2-0 lead off an RBI-single from Nordstrom and added another run, which was unearned, off a fielding error.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers tied the score at two with a two-run double by Nikki Moreno. Memphis would then take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kailey Kassner hit a double to centerfield, driving in Lelani Bernadino, just after Tori Gross grounded into a double play.
The Tigers added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Cougars would score one more run in the top of the seventh off a single by Nordstrom and it would not be enough for the win, as Wagner struckout for the final out of the game.
Sophomore Baillie Lott moved to 9-7 this season, striking out four, walking one and allowing five runs on nine hits. UH left seven runners on base and recorded only three hits. Memphis had four total errors, but was able to walk away with the 5-3 victory.
Houston will play the final game of the series with Memphis at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Tiger Softball Complex. Fans can watch live stats by clicking the Gametracker link on the softball page of UHCougars.com.
