HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team dropped the opening game of the three-game series against Southern Miss, 13-8, on Friday night at Cougar Field.
Houston trailed 10-0 entering the fourth inning, when Chris Wallace, William Kankel and Taylor White loaded the bases on three-straight walks. Matt Murphy plated Wallace and Kankel to give the Cougars their first runs of the game. In the next at bat, Jake Runte reached on a fielder's choice, scoring White while Murphy was thrown out at second. The Cougars added two more runs when Zak Presley singled up the middle, scoring Runte and Blake Kelso, who reached base on a single.
The Golden Eagles would answer, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth, while the Cougars did the same in the bottom of the inning. For the second straight inning, UH loaded the bases on three consecutive walks, this time from Kankel, White and Ty Stuckey. Matt Murphy hit into a double play to give the Cougars two out, however Kankel was able to score on the play. With two outs, Runte singled up the middle to score White to cut the deficit to five, 12-7.
Houston would only be able to put one final run up on the board when Ty Stuckey scored on a Runte double after reaching base on a single in the seventh inning but it wouldn't be enough as the Golden Eagles would add a final run in the ninth, while holding the Cougars scoreless in their final two at bats.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 14-18 on the season and 4-3 in league play.
