Baseball Snaps Losing Streak, Defeats Cal Poly 3-2

HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team snapped an eight-game losing streak, taking the final game of the series against Cal Poly, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field.
The Cougars move to 3-10 on the season and 1-2 all-time against the Mustangs.
Michael Goodnight led the way for the Cougars, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, no walks and six strikeouts. He is now 2-0 when pitching this season.
It would take three innings before either team would get on the board as the game was dominated by the pitching. Blake Kelso started things off for the Cougars, reaching base on a double to right center and he would score when Chase Dempsay hit a single through the left side.
Houston followed that up with another run in the fourth inning. Zak Presley led off with a single to left field. He stole second and scored when Codey Morehouse reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Cal Poly knotted the score, 2-2, in the seventh inning when Adam Melker scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a double down the right field line and Matt Jensen hit a solo home run over the left field fence. But that would be all the offense the Mustangs would be able to put on the board on the afternoon.
Houston broke the tie in the seventh inning when Taylor White led off with a triple to right field. John Cannon grounded out to the shortstop and Kelso hit an RBI single up the middle, plating White to give Houston their first win in nine games.
The Cougars finished the afternoon with 9 hits, holding the Mustangs to four. Houston is now 1-2 this season when outhitting their opponent.
LOOKING AHEAD
Houston will play a single game against Sam Houston State on March 10 at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Stockton, Calif., for a three-game series against Pacific on March 13-15. The series will be the Cougars first trip out of the state of Texas this season.
