GREENVILLE, N.C.--Sophomore Amanda Crabtree pitched a one-hitter and the Cougars hit a combined eight hits in game two as the University of Houston softball team split a doubleheader with East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. for first games of Conference USA Saturday. Houston lost the first game, 6-2 and won the second game 3-1.
With the win, Houston took away a six-game winning streak by the Pirates.
The Cougars move to 9-10 overall this season and 1-1 in C-USA. Houston will play East Carolina Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
Game Two: Houston 3, East Carolina 1
Although East Carolina's Marina Gusman-Brown scored on a wild pitch to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on one out, the Pirates were unable to get their first and only hit of the game until the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Cougars had four scoreless innings until they were able to put some hits and runs together in the fifth inning. After leading off the inning by hitting a double up the middle, senior Laurie Wagner scored Houston's first run of the game on a single hit by senior Haley Valis.
With bases loaded and only one out, East Carolina's pitcher Caitlin Wainwright walked sophomore Casey Willow to score Haley Valis from third. The Pirates were forced to bring in reserve pitcher Brooke Swann.
After the pitching change, senior Katie Bush hit an infield single to score sophomore Angela Spittler for one more run. Freshman Mary Tyler Dobson hit into a double-play to end the inning with Houston leading 3-1.
The rest of the game would remain scoreless and sophomore Amanda Crabtree would capture her first conference win and move to 5-5 this season. During the game she struck out five, walked three, and allowed on one run and one hit.
Wagner went 2-for-4 in the game with a double and Haley Valis went 2-for-3 in the game, including an RBI.
Game One: East Carolina 6, Houston 2
The Pirates got the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first scoring two runs on three hits.
Despite senior Haley Valis hitting her sixth double of the season in the top of the second inning, the Cougars were unable to score a run until later in the game.
It would be the top of the third inning when Houston put their first run on the board. Senior Katie Bush reached base on a walk and then scored on a single hit up the middle by senior Laurie Wagner.
During the inning, freshman Mary Tyler Dobson captured her first hit of the season hitting a single up the middle.
UH added one more run in the top of the fourth to tie the score 2-2 when freshman Melissa Gregson hit her second double of the season to right center. The hit scored Haley Valis, who reached base on a walk.
After two Cougar errors on no outs, the Pirates were able to put together four more runs and take the 6-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and eventually the win.
Sophomore Baillie Lott moves to 4-5 this season after walking two and allowing six runs on five hits.
