Baseball Loses to Cal Poly, 13-5

HOUSTON - The University of baseball team lost the first game of a three-game series against Cal Poly, 13-5, on Friday night at Cougar Field.
With the loss Houston falls to 2-9 on the season and 0-1 all-time against the Mustangs.
Houston jumped on the board first for the second consecutive game scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Blake Kelso led off with a triple to right field to open the game, scoring on a ground out to second base by William Kankel. Cal Poly followed that up in the top of the second scoring three runs to take the lead but Houston responded in the bottom of the inning. Zak Presley led off with a double to left field. With two outs, John Cannon hit a single through the left side scoring Presley. Cannon would steal second and score on a single from Kankel, tying the game 3-3.
Houston posted a third run in the third inning when Caleb Ramsey scored on a Presley single after reaching base on an error by the first baseman.
The Mustangs answered in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-4 lead.
The Cougars would pull within two in the fifth inning. Kankel singled to right field to open the bottom of the inning. He advanced to second on a ground out by Dempsay and he scored on Ramsey's single to right center.
But once again Cal Poly would answer with three runs in the sixth and add one run in the eighth and two in the ninth for the final score of 13-5.
LOOKING AHEAD
Houston will continue the series against the Mustangs on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the series will conclude on Sunday at noon.
Following the series this weekend, Houston will play a single game against Sam Houston State on March 10 at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Pacific on March 13-15.
