EL PASO, Texas--The University of Houston softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Conference USA-rival UTEP, losing game one, 7-6 in eight innings and winning game two, 17-9 with a season-high 15 hits and two grand slams. Houston moves to 13-13 overall and 4-3 in Conference USA.
Houston 17, UTEP 9
The Cougars had a season-high 15 hits and 17 runs, including a grand slam hit by Elaina Nordstrom and Baillie Lott to help defeat UTEP, 17-9 despite losing the first game.
The Cougars came out strong during the second game, scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Seniors Katie Bush, Elaina Nordstrom, Laurie Wagner and sophomore Baillie Lott hit singles. The single hit by Lott was her first recorded hit this season.
Sophomore Katy Beth Sherman started the top of the second inning with a walk, followed by two groundouts by Jessica Valis and Katie Bush. Nordstrom walked, and Christa Raley and Laurie Wagner hit two-out singles to score Sherman and Nordstrom and take the 6-0 advantage.
In the top of the third inning on two outs, Nordstrom hit the Cougars' first grand slam of the season for a 10-0 lead over the Miners.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jennifer Davis hit a single to knock Chelsea Troupe in for UTEP's first run of the game.
The Miners continued to hit in the bottom of the fourth inning when they added three more runs on four hits.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Miners added two more runs when Diana Parada led off with a home run and Stacie Townsend hit a single to score Camilla Carrera. The Miners loaded the bases, and Lott was able to strikeout two, and Sherman would make a diving catch in left field for the final out of the inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Cougars added seven more runs on five hits. Lott hit her first career grand slam and the second of the game. UH ended the inning with a 17-6 lead over UTEP.
Junior Lindsey Olson made her first Cougar debut in the bottom of the seventh inning when she came in as relief for Lott, but Lott would be right back in after Olson walked for and allowed three runs on one hit. With one out, Bush made an outstanding catch in centerfield to keep the runner at second and not allow any more runs and the game would end on a groundout to Lott.
Lott had seven strikeouts, the most for her this season, and allowed six runs on 11 hits, while only walking four. Lott also recorded five RBI.
Wagner went 4-for-5 with a double to extend her hitting streak to six games, while Elaina Nordstrom went 2-for-5 with a walk, three runs scored and five RBI.
Houston 6, UTEP 7
The Miners' junior pitcher Stacie Townsend got things started early hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning on one out.
With two outs in the top of the third, senior Elaina Nordstrom hit a double to left center to score senior Jessica Valis, who reached on an error by the second baseman, and senior Katie Bush, who reached base on a walk.
Senior Christa Raley would then be hit by a pitch just before senior Laurie Wagner would also hit a two-run double to score Nordstrom and Raley. The double was Wagner's fifth this season.
In the top of the fourth on two outs, Jessica Valis hit a single up the middle to score Gregson, who walked, forcing UTEP to make a pitching change, bringing in Cheslea Mayer in for Townsend. Jessica Valis would score the Cougars' sixth run when Bush hit a single to the left side.
The Miners added one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Ashley Ellis. With Ellis at first and Chelsea Troupe at third, Nordstrom threw it to Jessica Valis, who then threw it back to Nordstrom to tag Troupe out at home for the final out of the inning.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the sixth on two walks and an error by the third baseman, but was unable to add any runs.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, UTEP scored one run on a double hit by Troupe, and then tied the score at six with a three-run homer hit by Jennifer Davis. Despite the Miners scoring four runs on four hits, the Cougars were able to end the inning to force the game in extra innings.
The Miners ended the game, 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a double hit by Townsend to score Camilla Carrera.
During the eight inning game, sophomore Amanda Crabtree (7-8) struck out a career and season-high 13 batters. Houston had a combined eight hits and left eight batters on base. Houston is 0-3 in extra-inning games this season.
