Softball Travels to Austin for Mid-Week Doubleheader

HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team will travel to Austin, Texas, Wednesday to compete against Texas in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., followed by game two to be played at 7 p.m.
The Cougars (11-11, C-USA 3-2) enter the mid-week doubleheader after sweeping and shutting out Tulsa in the doubleheader played Monday, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed for two days because of rain.
Senior Elaina Nordstrom continues to lead the Cougars at the plate with her batting average of .420. Nordstrom went 4-for-6 against Tulsa on Monday, knocking in a total of three runs. She is second on the team in RBI with 15 behind senior Laurie Wagner's 18.
Senior Haley Valis hit her seventh double this season in the second game of the doubleheader against Tulsa. Freshman Melissa Gregson also had an outstanding day hitting her team-leading fifth home run this season to drive in three runs in the first game of the doubleheader.
Sophomore Amanda Crabtree captured her sixth and seventh wins, respectively after striking out a total of 14 batters in 10 innings of play Monday. She has 72 strikeouts so far this season and a 7-6 record.
Texas (20-9) is coming off a 3-3 performance in Fullerton, Calif. in the Judi Garman Classic. The Longhorns lost to Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, Arizona, 6-5, and Florida State, 2-0, and claimed victory over Bowling Green, 11-3, Arizona, 3-2, and Pacific, 7-2.
Loryn Johnson, who leads Texas in batting average at .422, has six doubles, three home runs and 25 RBI this season.
Desiree Williams has a batting average of .349 and leads the Longhorns in home runs with eight this season.
Leading in the circle for the Longhorns is Torrey Schroeder and Brittan Barnhill. Schroeder has a record of 9-2 and a total of 52 strikeouts, while Barnhill has a 9-5 record and 58 strikeouts in the circle.
Texas leads the all-time series, 12-2. Last season, Houston swept Texas in a doubleheader, 6-0 and 5-1 in nine innings on March 5, 2008.

UH will travel to El Paso, Texas, to play in a three-game conference series against UTEP (13-15, C-USA 2-4) beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a second game played at 6 p.m. Sunday will conclude the series with a game played at 1 p.m.
