HOUSTON - On a blustery afternoon at John E. Hoff Tennis Court Saturday, the University of Houston women's tennis team improved its record on the young spring season to 8-1 by handing McNeese State a 6-1 defeat.
"Today was tough with the wind, however we persevered and got the win," said head coach John Severance. "It was a rough weekend with playing at home Thursday and then traveling to Shreveport Friday for two matches and then back home for this match, but to come away with a 4-0 record this weekend showed our resilience and depth. We have a tough couple of weeks ahead of us and we need to continue to improve."
Freshman Alix Young took a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 win over Maria Frausto in the No. 5 singles match to improve to an impressive 4-0 this weekend and remain perfect on the spring at 8-0.
Sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk earned a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 1 singles match, while senior Lynley Wasson was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at the No. 3 position. Junior Neila Starratt earned a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 win in the No. 4 single slot and senior Vicky Simpson was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at the No. 6 single slot.
McNeese State's lone point of the afternoon came by virtue of Ralitsa Pridopska's 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 victory over Lucy Forward in the No. 2 singles match.
Houston swept the double side of the bracket to get the afternoon started on a winning note. The teams of Kacprzyk/Wasson and Laura Ring/Jordan MCombs each gave UH's 8-1 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slot, respectively. In the third match, Forward and Simpson had to fight for an 8-5 victory.
The Cougars are back in action next weekend when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to face Southern Miss and Northwestern State.
