HOUSTON - Despite two home runs from junior Chris Wallace, the University of Houston baseball team was unable to come up with a win against UC Irvine Saturday afternoon at Minute Maid Park. The Cougars lost to the Anteaters, 13-7.
With the Cougars trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning, Wallace hit his first home run of the season to get the Cougars on the board.
Wallace followed up his home run with a second in the sixth inning, scoring Chase Dempsay who reached base on a walk. The two home runs hit by Wallace mark the first time a player has hit two home runs in a game since Jimmy Cesario hit two against UTSA on May 13, 2008. It was also the fourth time in Houston College Classic history that a player has hit two home runs in a game. The last player to do so was Mike Goss of Oklahoma. Goss hit two home runs in a 8-5 win over the Cougars in 10 innings on March 1, 2008.
Late in the game, with the Cougars trailing 12-3, UH was able to gain some momentum, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but it wouldn't be enough to take a lead and Houston would lose their third straight game. With two outs, Houston loaded the bases and Matt Murphy hit a single to right field scoring Wallace and Zak Presley. William Kankel followed that up with a single down the right field line scoring Murphy and Ramsey to cap the Cougars' scoring for the afternoon.
The Cougars will close out play at the Houston College Classic on Sunday against Texas A&M. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
