HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore closer Chase Dempsay was named to the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason All-American Team as an Honorable Mention selection.
There are 66 different schools represented on the CBI Preseason All-America Team, and 24 of the 30 conferences have at least one player represented. Dempsay was one of four Conference USA players named to the list.
This is the third preseason award for the Baytown, Texas native, who was also named a Third Team selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball.
Dempsay looks to lead the team in 2009 after becoming only the fourth player in UH single-season history to record double-digit saves with 11 a season ago. He also set freshman records in saves and wins with eight.
He finished last season with an 8-3 record with 49 strikeouts, a 2.53 ERA and a .214 opposing batting average.
A true freshman in 2008, Dempsay was named a Freshman All-America by Rivals.com, Louisville Slugger and Pro-Line Athletic NCBWA.
The Cougars open the 2009 season Feb. 20-22 when they play Kansas State in a weekend, non-conference series at Cougar Field. The series begins at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, continues at 2 p.m. on Feb. 21 and will wrap up at noon on Feb. 22.
