Golf, Moser Lead Way at Rice Intercollegiate

HOUSTON - Senior captain Ben Moser first back-to-back, sub-par rounds to stand atop the leaderboard after the first day of the Rice Intercollegiate on Monday.
Competing on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course at Westwood Country Club, Moser posted a 3-under-par 69 and bettered that by one stroke to tie his career low in the afternoon session to finish the first day with a score of 137, one stroke ahead of San Francisco's Ji Hwan Park.
The Waterloo, Ontario, native was just part of a solid team effort by the Cougars who led the team standings with a 36-hole score of 575. UH stood in first place after the first round with a score of 294 and posted a team total of 281 in the second round for the lowest round of the day.
The Cougars finished 11 strokes ahead of Pacific and Liberty.
All five Cougar linksters finished the first day among the top-25 individual leaders. Sophomore Clark Mitzner stood in a tie for 10th place at 146 and posted a career-low 69 in the afternoon round. Junior Jackie Lindsey was tied for 17th with a score of 147, while sophomore Matt Eschenburg was tied for 21st at 148.
Junior Beau Davis posted a two-round score of 149 to stand in a tie for 24th place.
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes, beginning at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday.
This is the spring season-opening tournament for the Cougars and the team's first of two tournaments in the city of Houston. Following the Rice Intercollegiate, the Cougars play host to 12 teams during their own All-American Intercollegiate on Feb. 23-24 on the Tradition course at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring.
