BATON ROUGE, La. - Despite a game-high 18 points from junior forward Courtney Taylor, the University of Houston women's basketball team could not overcome No. 7 LSU of its home court, falling to the Lady Tigers by the score of 72-54 in front of 2,798 fans at the Maravich Center.
The loss drops Houston's overall record to 3-1, while LSU remains perfect on the season with a 3-0 record.
Taylor narrowly missed her 29th career double-double and finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, while fellow junior Lesslee Mason pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and narrowly missed a double-double with nine points.
Sophomore Roxana Button represented the only other UH player in double-figure scoring with 10 points on the afternoon.
LSU got going early, scoring the game's first six points to lead by half dozen with 18:16 before UH got its first points of the day on a free throw by Brittney Scott.
UH countered with a run of its own that culminated in a four-point UH advantage at 12-8 on a bucket by sophomore Porsche Landry with 11:56 to play in the opening stanza.
LSU closed the half on a run but a Taylor 3-pointer on the final score of the half and curved a little of the momentum for the home squad. The basket cut the Lady Tiger lead to single digits and sent them to the locker room leading 31-22.
The Cougars and Lady Tigers played a tough first half, but the LSU inside game was the biggest factor in the opening period, as it held a 14-4 advantage over Houston on points scored in the paint. LSU also owned a 27-16 advantage in the rebounding column through the game's first 20 minutes.
During the second half, the LSU lead swelled to 27 with 5:15 to play on a jumper by Adrienne Webb before the Cougars scored 11 of the game's final 15 points to give the game its final score.
LSU got a double-double from guard Katherine Graham and 17 points from Webb off the bench in the winning effort.
The Cougars continue their road heavy schedule in the month of November on Tuesday when they make an appearance in Coral Gables, Fla., to face off against Miami in an 11 a.m. (CST) contest from UM's BankUnited Center.
