HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team fell to Conference USA leader Memphis, 2-0, on a cold and drizzly Friday night at Robertson Stadium.
Despite the score, Houston (3-8-1, 1-3-1 C-USA) tallied the same amount of saves (4), shots (8), corner kicks (1) and fouls (9) as Memphis (9-4, 4-1 C-USA).
The Tigers drew first blood at the 15:10 mark when freshman forward Averi Hallman passed the ball across the goal box to junior forward Ashley Berra who slid it past Houston keeper Lauren Frazier. The goal marked Berra's eight of the season and Hallman's third assist on the year.
Houston had its first opportunity to get on the board in the 42nd minute when freshman midfielder Morgan Vela, fresh off the bench, shot between the posts. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Memphis net minder Elise Kuhar-Pitters scooped up the ball, preventing it from hitting the net.
After half time, Houston was able to hold off the Tigers for the majority of the second half. The Cougars notched two shots on goal and two saves but competition grew fierce nearing the 79th minute. Berra and Hallman teamed up again to score another goal against the Cougars. Berra collected Hallman's pass from midfield and sent the ball high into the net. Berra totals nine goals on the season while Hallman records four assists.
The Cougars close out the weekend Sunday at home against the UAB Blazers at 1 p.m. The first 100 fans will receive free t-shirts.
