HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team was swept by their cross-town rivals, Rice, Wednesday night, 3-0 (15-25, 26-28, 23-25) at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Senior Kinsey Cave led Houston (6-14; 3-2), tying a game-high with 13 kills. Freshman Tara Roenicke added 27 assists, while junior Amanda Carson turned in 19 digs.
With the loss, UH falls to 58-15 all-time against the Owls.
The Cougars kept the score within two, 8-6, in the first set before the Owls were able to grab three quick points to extend their lead, 10-6, forcing head coach Bill Walton to call his first timeout. Out of the break, the Cougars allowed Rice to extend its lead to six, 14-8, prompting a second Cougar timeout. The Cougars scored the first point off the bench but they would be held to 15 points as the Owls captured the 25-15 win.
UH took a 9-5 early lead into a Rice timeout to begin the second set. The Owls followed that up, scoring the first point out of the break and it set up an Owl comeback as they pulled within on, 13-12. For awhile Houston regained momentum in the match, taking an 18-14 lead into a second Rice timeout but the Owls would not give up as they scored the first three points of the bench and eventually regained the lead, 21-20. They battled point-for-point the rest of the way before the Owls slipped away with the win, 28-26.
In the third set, Houston sprinted to a 7-3 lead forcing an Owl timeout. Out of the break, however, the Owls were able to tie the score, 8-8, and the two teams went on to trade leads until the Rice was able to pull away for good 21-20 en route to the win.
