Polish natives progress to main draw

Houston, Texas. - The University of Houston tennis team booked three players into the main draw of the ITA Regional tournament today, after junior Joanna Kacprzyk and freshman Maja Kazimieruk both won their singles matches in the final round of qualifying.
Kacprzyk defeated Kerryn Potgieter from Texas Tech, 6-0, 6-1 and Kazimieruk defeated SMU's Claudia Hildalgo, 6-1, 6-1.
Both Kacprzyk and Kazimieruk joined freshman Bryony Hunter in the main draw, but all three Cougars could not progress any further. Hunter was defeated by Julie Chao from Rice, 6-0, 6-1 and Kacprzyk lost out to Texas Tech's Elizabeth Ullathorne, 6-2, 6-4. Kazimieruk had the closest fought match but was eventually defeated by Corpus Christi's Mirna Cicak, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
Junior Elena Kazakova had earlier been defeated in the last round of qualifying by Carlene Leyden from Texas, 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles play also began on Saturday, as Joanna Kacprzyk and Maja Kazimieruk teamed up together to continue their impressive singles play in doubles, as they won 8-6 against Manijee Ashrafi and Diana Mendez from Lamar. In the next round they lost out to No. 3 seeds, SMU's Pavi Francis and Marta Lesniak 8-1.
Elena Kazakova and Bryony Hunter teamed up for the second time this fall, but lost out to Carolina DeLuca and Marina DeLuca from UTEP, 8-3. Junior Laura Ring and freshman Alexandra Pickerill were defeated by Rice's Rebecca Lin and Jessica Jackson, 8-0.
The Cougars will take to the court again tomorrow for consolation play.
