HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team reported to practice Monday in preparations for the upcoming 2009 season.
The Cougars start this season in Cathedral City Calif. in the Cathedral City Kickoff, where they play California at 12 p.m., Feb. 6.
Pitchers and catchers reported to the Cougar Softball Stadium Jan. 12, with the rest of the team joining them Monday.
"We were glad to have the first day over. Now we can focus on getting back into game shape. It is very clear who worked hard over the break and who has some catching up to do," head coach Kyla Holas said.
Eleven letterwinners return this season including seniors, Jessica Valis, Haley Valis, Elaina Nordstrom, Katie Bush, Christa Raley and Laurie Wagner, and sophomores Jennifer Klinkert, Casey Willow, Baillie Lott, Katy Beth Sherman and Angela Spittler.
This season, seven new faces join the roster including junior Lindsey Olson, sophomore pitcher Amanda Crabtree and freshman Kaela DeBroeck, Melissa Gregson, Jennifer Krause, Mary Tyler Dobson and Paz Potato.
"We have two weeks before we hit the road and I just hope we have enough time to get everyone in the same spot," Holas said. "Opening up with Cal does not leave much room for error."
California finished last season 43-27. They went 3-1 to win the Fresno Regional, before going 0-2 in the Gainesville Super Regional.
This season the Golden Bears have added seven new players in addition to the 11 letterwinners that returned.
