HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team completed a 3-1 weekend in the Sugar Land Round Robin at Imperial Park, losing the final game to St. Mary's 5-3.
The Cougars beat Louisiana-Lafayette 3-2, to start the day Sunday. All three runs were walked in.
Last season, Houston played UL-Lafayette in the Super Regionals, which took place at the Cougar Softball Field.
Both teams split the first two games, but with just one game shy of the World Series, the Cougars fell short in the final game, with a 4-0 decision going to the Ragin' Cajuns.
All three of UH runs, in the final game against St. Mary's, came in the third inning when the Cougars had four hits.
Senior Elaina Nordstrom went 2-for-3 with a walk against the Rattler's. Freshman Melissa Gregson went 3-for-3, with three singles, while freshman Mary Tyler Dobson went 1-for-3.
Saturday's Results
The Cougars defeated Texas State 4-2 with a pair of homeruns from Nordstrom, one of which knocked in senior Jessica Valis, who reached base on a single.
Houston went on to beat Sam Houston State 11-1 in the second game of the day, with a total of 13 hits. Dobson went 2-for-4, scoring two runs. Senior Katie Bush went 3-for-5, while sophomore Casey Willow went 3-for-4.
Everyone saw playing time on the field this weekend in preparation for the regular season.
The Cougars are coming off of an impressive 54-11 record in the 2008 season, making softball is the only sport in Houston history to record more than 50 wins.
Led by head coach Kyla Holas, 2008 C-USA Coach of the Year, the Cougars earned the program's first ever national ranking, and was ranked in the Top 10 for most of the season.
The 2009 season includes five tournaments. First, the Cougars will travel to Cathedral City, Calif. Feb. 6-8, to compete in the Cathedral City Kickoff. There, Houston will play teams including California, UC Riverside, James Madison, Fresno State and Oregon State.
