HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team opens Conference USA play this weekend when they travel to Tulane and UTEP. The Cougars will look to improve on their four-match win streak dating back to Sept. 12.
Houston (7-5, 0-0 C-USA) defeated Sam Houston State, 3-0, on Tuesday in the home opener after spending the first four weeks of the season on the road.
The Cougars have three players with at least 100 kills this season, with senior Justine Farmer (162), freshman Ingrida Zauere (115) and sophomore Lucy Charuk (108). Sophomore Amanda Carson has a team-high 26 service aces and her 0.57 per set average is 17th in the nation. Senior Kelsey King leads all players with 494 assists.
When Houston takes to the court Friday against the Green Wave, it will be the 26th meeting all-time against the two schools. Houston holds a commanding 22-4 all-time lead in the series, after splitting two matches last season. Tulane holds a 8-4 record this season, having won their last three contests including a 3-2 win over then-ranked No. 14 Middle Tennessee.
UH is 7-2 all-time against the Miners after winning the home match-up and losing the road contest last season. Houston is also 2-2 all-time in El Paso, Texas. The Miners enter the weekend with a 4-9 record after concluding the preseason with a 2-1 record last weekend at the Friars Classic at Providence College.
Following the weekend on the road, Houston will be back in the friendly confines of the Athletic/Alumni Center when they play host to Tulsa and SMU on Oct. 3 and 4, respectively. Houston will also welcome Texas State in a mid-week match-up on Oct. 7.
