HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Sam Houston State, 3-0, Tuesday night in the 2008 home opener at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Cougars won with scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Cougars (7-5) improve to 17-6 in home openers under head coach Bill Walton. The Sept. 23 home opener is also the latest home start in Cougar history according to the best Houston record books.
Senior Justine Farmer led all players with 11 kills, while senior Kelsey King had a game-high 32 assists.
After recording a convincing 25-14 win in the second set, Houston would have to battle to take a 2-0 lead into the third set. UH trailed the second set, 21-20, but after back-to-back kills from King, the Bearkats were forced to take a timeout. The Cougars used the momentum to extend their lead, 24-21, and hold on for the win.
Sam Houston State played a tough third set, keeping the score a close 13-11 in the Cougars advantage. But UH used a 5-0 run to pull away, 18-11, and the Bearkats wouldn't be able to recover. Sophomore Malia Vavao recorded her only kill of the night on set point to give Houston the 25-19 win.
With the win, UH improves to 3-2 in three-set matches this season and has now won four-straight matches.
