Arlington, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Arkansas-Little Rock, 3-0, Friday afternoon at the UT Arlington/Holiday Inn Invitational. The Cougars won with scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-23.
Houston (5-5) won their second match in a row and snapped a six-match win streak by the Trojans. The Cougars were led by senior Justine Farmer and freshman Ingrida Zauere. The duo recorded double-digit kills with 17 and 10, respectively.
Sophomore Amanda Carson added five service aces in the win. That total is the sixth most in a single match in Cougar history.
As a team, the Cougars held the Trojans to a .150 hitting percentage, the second lowest of a UH opponent this season. The Trojans also recorded just 26 kills. This marks the lowest kill total by an opponent this season and the second time that Houston has held a team to under 30 kills.
After the Cougars jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, they went on a 4-1 run to extent their lead to 7-2. From that point it was all Houston, as they would lead by as many as 12 and win the first set.
The second set would be a back-and-forth battle with 10 tie scores and five lead changes but Farmer would record seven of her 17 kills in the set for a .600 hitting percentage to give Houston the win.
The Cougars would cap the afternoon with a 25-23 win in the third set to move to 1-2 in three-set matches this season.
UH is now 3-1 all-time against UALR; having won the last two meetings.
The Cougars will play a 1pm match against UT Arlington, Saturday, before returning home for the 2008 home opener on Sept. 23 against Sam Houston State. Following the mid-week match, the Cougars will open Conference USA play at Tulane on Sept. 26 at 7pm. Live stats for the UT Arlington match will be available by logging onto www.utamavs.com.
