Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match to Georgia

Austin, Texas -- The University of Houston volleyball team lost to Georgia in the opening round of play at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational Friday in Austin. The Cougars lost to the Bulldogs 3-2 with scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 9-15.
Senior Justine Farmer and freshman Nataliya Panova led the Houston (3-4) with a double-double. Farmer ended the match with 13 kills and 14 digs, while Panova had 10 kills and 11 digs.
Houston finished the match leading the Bulldogs in kills (64), attack percentage (.292), assists (63) and digs (59).
Through the first two sets Houston was tied the Georgia at one set apiece. In the third set, Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. The Cougars led by as many as eight a multiple times in the match and went on to take the 25-17 win.
Panova led all players with six kills on six attempts and the Cougars combined to record a .500 attack percentage.
In the fourth set, Houston would open with the first points of the set just as they had done in the previous four sets. UH led throughout much of the set but the Bulldogs battled back and stole a 25-23 win to force a fifth set.
It was all Georgia in the fifth set. The opened with a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Houston will pull within two with the score 8-6 but it was as close as they would get.
The Cougars are now 0-3 this season in five set matches.
Houston will return to action Friday in Austin with two matches. The Cougars will face host, Texas, at noon and Texas State at 4:30 p.m. Following the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational, Houston will play host to Lamar at 7 p.m. in the 2008 home opener. Following the match, Houston will welcome Stephen F. Austin, Loyola Marymount and Arizona in the Flo Hyman Invitational on Sept. 19-20.
