Tropical Storm Edouard Sends Cougars Inside

HOUSTON, Texas - With the rain and wind of Tropical Storm Edouard blanketing the UH Practice Fields, UH head coach Kevin Sumlin decided to pack up his squad and bring them indoors, where the Cougars worked out for over two hours in the confined elements of the Yeoman Field House.
On the Astroturf in just their helmets the Cougars went through a variety of drills, both in positional groups and the entire unit. Despite the entire squad having to practice on just one field, Sumlin is seeing some progress with his team.
"Hopefully, we are a little bit better than we were yesterday," the first-year head coach said. "I'd rather be outside, and we'll try to get back outside tomorrow. Obviously by being indoors today, we ought to be that much better because we had more meeting time.
"But, tomorrow we'll put some shoulder pads on to see who is still here."
Adjusting on the fly is nothing new for Sumlin, his coaching staff and his squad. Sumlin, who served as the offensive coordinator at both Oklahoma and Texas A&M before his arrival at Houston, makes a great comparison when discussing changing preseason camp plans.
"Unlike a lot of people's jobs, as I was talking to someone the other day about this," Sumlin added, "coaches are used to (adjusting.) Coaches are used to someone coming out and running a completely different offense that you practiced against all week. You better be able to adjust.
"We just set a different schedule, and it worked out. Fortunately here, the storm wasn't that bad, and so we were able to get more meeting time today and go indoors, split practice up a bit and it worked out great."
Barring any other downpours on the UH Practice Fields, the Cougars will return to outdoor football tomorrow afternoon, putting on the shoulder pads for the first time in their 5:30 pm workout.
