HOUSTON - With the 2008 season opener less than four days away, the University of Houston football team continued it preparations with a solid workout Tuesday afternoon on the UH practice fields.
The Cougars worked out for nearly two-and-a-half hours in full pads Tuesday under warmer temperatures and humid conditions.
Following the practice, first-year head coach Kevin Sumlin said he was pleased with his team's performance.
"We were in full pads today, and we got some things done," Sumlin said.
The Cougars open their 2008 season at 6 p.m., Saturday, when they play host to Southern in the Cougar Football Classic on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. It will be the first meeting between these two teams on the gridiron.
Fans can hear the game live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, David Klingler and Ted Pardee providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sidelines. The pregame show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
Fans also can follow live stats over the Internet by clicking the Gametracker link at UHCougars.com.
After some recent wet weather dropped temperatures into the Houston for this time of year. But if the players were looking for any sympathy from their head coach, they were looking in the wrong place.
"I am glad it was hot, because it hasn't been very hot for the last week. I am glad it was warm for the first time in a while," Sumlin said. "I am glad it wasn't rainy and 80 degrees. It's getting back to 95 degrees and muggy. That's where we like to play and that's what we want to play in."
The Cougars have been working out since Aug. 3 with the start of training camp with the players returning to class this week. After bumping heads with teammates for the last two-and-a-half weeks, both coaches and players are ready to see opponents in a different uniform.
The players are anxious to get onto the field Saturday night, and so are we as coaches," Sumlin said. "We are anxious to see where we are on Saturday. I don't know where we are yet, but I do know that we are better than we were two-and-a-half-weeks ago."
