Preseason Camp Closes For Cougars

HOUSTON, Texas - Preseason football camp came to a close this evening, when the University of Houston spent around an hour-and-a-half at Robertson Stadium simulating pre-game warm-up, running the two-minute drill and tidying up the special teams in anticipation of the season opener in one week.
The Cougars kick off the 2008 season by playing host to Southern University on Saturday, August 30, at 6 pm in the friendly confines of John O'Quinn Field.
UH head coach Kevin Sumlin, who will make his debut as the Cougars' head coach, is confident his team is ready for the rigors of going to school, working out and practicing in preparation for a Saturday game.
"School starts on Monday, and those guys are out of camp," Sumlin said, "and our routine will change a bit, but not a whole lot. During the first week of camp, we still were in summer school, so we have a little bit of an advantage on knowing how to mesh the two together.
"We'll go about like we did the first week of camp, with the guys going to school and lifting (weights) during the day. Then, we will practice around 4 pm each afternoon."
After taking Sunday off, Houston returns to the practice fields on Monday to prepare for its first-ever encounter with Southern, a Football Championship Subdivision team from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC.) The clash with the Jaguars marks the third consecutive season the Cougars have faced a SWAC team, standing 2-0 after a 42-22 win over Grambling State in 2006, as well as 2007's season finale against Texas Southern, a 59-6 win for Houston.
