Football Continues Training Camp

HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team continued with training camp on Wednesday, hitting the practice field for a shortened practice in shoulder pads and helmets.
After raining for most of the day, the sun came out in time for the start of practice giving the Cougars nice weather in which to work.
First-year head coach Kevin Sumlin was pleased with his team's effort and decided to end the workout after about an hour and a half on the team's practice fields.
"It's been pretty good," Sumlin said. "We went out and took the pads off today. We worked a little bit more on ourselves and the scout teams. I thought the execution was really good.
"We accomplished some things we wanted to accomplish. Just because you get out early, doesn't mean you didn't get your work done. We're getting to that point where we are starting to rep out the guys who are going to play. And if they get done what they need to, we don't need to be out there."
UH opens its 2008 season at 6 p.m., Aug. 30, when it plays host to Southern in the Cougar Football Classic on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. It will be the first meeting between these two teams on the gridiron.
Fans can hear the game live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, David Klingler and Ted Pardee providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sidelines. The pregame show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.

With the start of the season just over a week away, the excitement has begun to build around camp, but the players are still focusing on the immediate future and finishing up training camp.
"We're still in camp," Sumlin said. "We have a couple more days to go. I think the players will start to feel a little more anxious this weekend when we get out of camp. But we are still in camp mode right now, working on fundamentals everyday and getting our team concepts down. We're starting to gel a little bit."
