HOUSTON -- The University of Houston track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition in the Houston Invitational on Friday.
Kiara Pulliam set a season-best in the women's shot put to lead the way for the Cougars. Her mark of 14.48m (47-06.25) was good for a second place finish. Also competing for Houston was Charlissa Foster, who finished in fourth with a mark of 12.77m (41-10.75).
Derek Schutz finished in fourth place in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.90m (16-00.75).
Sidney Flores finished in sixth place in the men's shot put with a hurl of 15.07m (49-05.50). Brandon Hubbard finished in eighth with a mark of 14.35m (47-01.00). Also competing for the Cougars were Morgan Floyd (12.61m) and Wesley Bray (12.31m) - both of whom set season-bests in the event.
The Houston Invitational will continue on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's sections of the hammer throw. Running events are slated to start at 11 a.m. with the running of the 5,000-meters.
Saturday will also be Senior Day for the UH track and field team. The University will honor its departing seniors with a special ceremony that will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Admission to the meet is $5 for spectators.

Following the meet, the Cougars will begin preparation for the 2008 Conference USA Outdoor Championships in El Paso. The three-day meet will be held May 15-17.
