Golf sits at 14th at the Adminstaff Augusta State Invitational

Houston- The University of Houston golf team shot a opening-round 299 and is in 14th place at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational at the par 72, 7,403-yard Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga., on Friday afternoon.
Jordan Irwin (Sr., Calgary, Alberta) carded the Cougars best round of the day with his even-par 72 to finish tied for 17th individually.
Juniors' Ben Moser and Brady Shivers both shot a first-round 75 followed by junior Steven Frazier's 77 and junior Jackie Lindsey's 83 to account for all other participating Cougars.
Heading into the clubhouse with the lead after the first day is No. 3 UCLA. The Bruins carded an opening round four-under-par 284 and leads second-place No. 32 North Carolina by two strokes. Lamar is third at 287, No. 10 Georgia Tech is fourth at 288 and No. 44 NC State rounds out the top five at 289.
The second five starts with No. 1 nationally-ranked Georgia in sixth with a 290, Division II juggernaut South Carolina-Aiken carded a 291 and No. 47 East Tennessee State is eighth at 293, two shots ahead of ninth-place No. 33 Virginia Tech. No. 23 Clemson and No. 16 South Carolina are tied for 10th at 296 followed Georgia Southern and Georgia State who are both tied for 12th at 297. Host Augusta State and No. 8 Tennessee are tied with UH for 14th at 299.
Lucas Lee of UCLA, Chase MacFarland of North Carolina and Gareth Shaw of East Tennessee State sit atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under-par 69.
The tournament, an annual precursor to the Masters, features six of the top 12 teams in the country, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Fourteen of the 17 Division I teams in the event are ranked in the top 50 and USC-Aiken is ranked third in Division II this season.
