Birmingham, Ala. -- The University of Houston softball team completed the sweep of UAB this weekend with a 8-0 win over the Blazers Sunday at George Ward Park in Birmingham, Ala. Three home runs highlighted the Cougar offense that registered six hits. Senior Angel Shamblin added 10 strikeouts for her seventh double-digit strikeout game this year.
Shamblin also gave up just one hit and walking one. She is 27-2 on the year and has a 0.57 ERA.
UH notched back-to-back four run innings in the fourth and fifth.
All four runs in the fourth inning came with two outs. Junior Katie Bush hit a leadoff single to begin the inning and junior Laurie Wagner was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Both scored on the next at bat as a result of two UAB errors from the first baseman while senior Amanda Grote advanced to second. Junior Haley Valis would score Grote with a two run home run to left field in the next at bat. The home run gives her 10 for the year and she is now the fourth Cougar to reach double-digit home runs this season.
Freshman Jennifer Klinkert and junior Christa Raley hit two more Cougar home runs in the fifth inning. Raley hit a leadoff home run to left field, her fourth this year.
Klinkert added a three-run shot to left field, scoring juniors Jessica Valis, and Katie Bush. Klinkert's homer was her 13th this season, giving her the second most on the team and it ranks third most home runs in the Houston single-season record books.
No. 9 Houston moves to 44-7 overall and 18-2 in Conference USA. They are 18-6 in the all-time series against the Blazers.
