No. 14/15 Softball Falls to DePaul, 5-3

Fresno, Calif. - The University of Houston softball team fell to No. 16 DePaul Sunday, 5-3, during the final day of the Bingham Toyota Bulldog Classic on Bulldog Diamond on the campus of Fresno State.
No. 14/15 Houston falls to 20-3 overall this season and 4-14 all-time against the Blue Demons.
In the bottom of the first, the Blue Demons opened the game with a single by catcher Jackie Tarulli-Fisher. After a walk by the next batter, pitcher Becca Heteniak hit a double to right center scoring both runners to take the 2-0 lead. They would move the score to 3-0 in the third after DePaul hit two back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning.
Junior Elaina Nordstrom reached base on a walk in the top of the fourth. Freshman Katy Beth Sherman would come in to pinch run for the catcher and she would eventually score on a passed ball to cut the lead, 3-1.
DePaul would respond in the bottom of the inning with an RBI homerun over the centerfield fence by Sandy Vojik.
The Cougars would get their offense going in the sixth inning. Junior Katie Bush opened the inning reaching base on a bunt and Nordstrom was walked. Senior Laurie Wagner loaded the bases with a single to left field. Senior Amanda Grote would score runners on second and third with a double to centerfield to pull the Cougars within two.
Despite cutting the deficit to two runs, Houston would not be able to get any closer in their last at bat of the game and they would lose, 5-3.

The Cougars will wrap up play at the Bingham Toyota Bulldog Classic with a 5pm game against host Fresno State.
Houston will stay in Fresno, Calif. for a Tuesday double-header against Fresno State at 5pm. The Cougars will then begin conference play March 15 in Huntington, W. Va., against Marshall. UH will also play Virginia Tech (March 18) and Ohio State (March 19) before returning to Houston.
