Irving, Texas - The University of Houston softball team swept the weekly Conference USA Player of the Week awards for the second time this season. Junior Laurie Wagner was named the Hitter of the Week and senior Angel Shamblin was named the Pitcher of the Week for their efforts in the Cougars sweep of Memphis on March 29-30.
Shamblin pitched a perfect game in the Cougars game one win over the Tigers. It was the second of her career and the second in program history. It was also the first perfect game in C-USA this season. She added nine strikeouts in the win. Shamblin also pitched the final game of the series recording 15 strikeouts, tying her season-best for strikeouts.
She moves to 18-2 this season in the circle. During the weekend, she allowed just four hits, no runs and 24 strikeouts. Shamblin has a 0.59 ERA this season to pace the Cougars.
This is Shamblin's fourth Pitcher of the Week award this season and the 13th of her career.
Wagner hit two home runs in the Houston's game three win over Memphis. The first was a two-run home run in the first inning with her second coming in the sixth inning. She helped the Cougars earn their third-straight C-USA series sweep. Wagner hit .714 (5-for-7) over the weekend and she paces the team this season with a .433 batting average.
The Houston native added another home run in the second game of the series. The three home runs give her nine on the season tying her for most on the team. She needs just one more home run to break into the top five for most home runs in a season.
This is Wagner's first Hitter of the Week honor this season and the second of her career.
The Cougars will travel to Orlando, Fla., for a three-game series against UCF on April 5-6. They will return for an April 8 game against the USA Olympic Team at Memorial Park.
