HOUSTON - University of Houston pitcher Angel Shamblin pitched a perfect game in the Cougars 9-0 win on Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium over the Memphis Tigers. The perfect game was the second of Shamblin's career and the first in Conference USA this season. Houston went on to win the second game of the double-header, 7-1, behind four Cougar home runs.
Shamblin also added nine strikeouts in the win and improves to 17-2 this season in the circle.
No. 11 Houston is 30-4 this season and 8-0 in Conference USA. They move to 6-2 all-time against Memphis. The eight-game win streak in conference play is a program record for consecutive conference wins.
The Cougars opened the game up scoring two runs in each of their first at bats. Freshman Jennifer Klinkert scored in the first after reaching base on a walk and junior Laurie Wagner followed scoring after a double put her in scoring position.
In the second inning, junior Haley Valis started things out for the Cougars with a double to left center. Junior Christa Raley would bring her in with a double of her own and eventually score after a single by junior Katie Bush.
After adding one more run in the third inning, Houston opened it up in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs. Shamblin who reached base on a walk and scored on a double by freshman Angel Spittler to start things off. Raley added another run, scoring on a single by junior Jessica Valis. Wagner closed out the game with double to right center scoring the final two runs of the game, giving Houston the 9-0 win.
Game Two- Houston 7, Memphis 1
Houston improved to 8-0 in C-USA with a 7-1 win over Memphis is the second game of the double-header. The Cougars got the win behind four home runs, including two from senior Amanda Grote.
Freshman Baillie Lott put the Cougars on the board first in the second inning. She would score on a single by Haley Valis.
In the bottom of the third inning, Houston extended their lead behind three Cougar home runs. Junior Laurie Wagner and Grote hit back-to-back home runs over left center and Lott hit her first career home run scoring junior Haley Valis to take the 6-0 lead.
The final run of the game for the Cougars came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Grote hit her second home run of the game and her forth this season.
The Tigers got their lone run of the afternoon in the second game with a home run from Leila Dolfo in the top of the sixth inning.
Lott moved to 6-1 in the circle this season and allowed three hits, one run, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Cougars will be back on the field Sunday to close out the series with a single game at noon at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston will be looking for their first ever 9-0 start and third straight series sweep in conference play.
