HOUSTON -- After moving to 9-0 this season, including a 2-0 mark over ranked opponents, freshman Jennifer Klinkert and senior Angel Shamblin swept the weekly Conference USA softball awards as announced by the conference office Monday.
Klinkert was named the C-USA Hitter of the Week for the first time in her career after hitting a grand slam against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to give them their ninth-straight win of the season.
Klinkert helped lead the Houston offense that outscored its opponents 33-1 over the weekend in the Crowne Plaza Classic by hitting .583 (7-for-12) including two home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored. Her five RBI against the Islanders are a team-high this season. In Houston's two wins over No. 14 DePaul, Klinkert went 3-for-5 with one home run and 2 RBI. Her .458 batting average this season is fourth best on the team.
After notching two shutout victories on the mound against the Blue Demons, Shamblin was named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week, the first in 2008 and the 10th of her career.
Shamblin, Houston's all-time strikeout leader, now has 23 career shutouts and she moved to 4-0 this season. In 14.0 innings against DePaul, Shamblin gave up just nine hits and had 11 strikeouts. For the season, she has pitched three complete shutout wins, striking out 32 batters to lead the team. Her 26.0 innings pitched this season is a team-high and throughout that time she has given up just one earned run. Shamblin's ERA is 0.27 and her opponents are hitting a combined .181 against her this season.
Houston will be home this weekend when they play host to the Marriott Houston Classic. The three-day tournament includes Kansas, Cal State Northridge, Boston University and Centenary. Prior to the tournament they will host a mid-week double header against Sam Houston State on Feb. 20 at 4pm and 6pm.
