TEMPE, Ariz. - Up against the #18 ranked team in the nation, the University of Houston women's tennis team had its hands full with Arizona State, falling 7-0 to the Sun Devils on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 2-4 on the season and return to action on Wednesday, February 13, playing host to both Stephen F. Austin State and Lee College at the John E. Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
"This was a humbling experience at the hands of an incredible ASU team," said UH head coach John Severance. "ASU is definitely the toughest team on our schedule. With that being said, we grew as a team and I feel confident that we got better this weekend by playing a pair of Pac-10 schools."
The Sun Devils jumped all over the Cougars in doubles play, setting the tone for the afternoon. Houston managed just two points in losing all three doubles matches. At #1 Jordan McCombs and Lucy Forward were beat 8-1 by the ASU tandem of Wendy Pilecka and Jessica Leitch, while Lynley Wasson and Vicky Simpson also dropped a 8-1 decision to Laila Abdala and Lauren Megale at #3. Leila Salek and Izabella Glinska were shutout, 8-0, at #2.
In singles play the Sun Devils again illustrated why they are a Top 20, blitzing through the Houston lineup without dropping a set.
Forward dropped her #1 match 6-4, 6-2, against Kelcy McKenna, while #2 Salek fell 6-4, 6-1 to Abdala. Then at #3 Joanna Kacprzyk took just two points in losing 6-1, 6-1, to Pilecka as did Wasson by an identical score at #4 to Leitch.
Finally, Simpson was downed 6-0, 6-1, at #5 by Ashlee Brown, and McCombs fell 6-0, 6-1 to Megale at #6.
