Women's Basketball Set to Host Akron Sunday

HOUSTON - Riding the best start since the 2004-05 season when the team open the year 10-0, the University of Houston women's basketball team will put its perfect 5-0 home mark on the line Sunday when it hosts Akron in a 2 p.m. contest at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars are 7-3 this season and coming off a road trip that saw them split a pair of games at the St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic, including a 80-62 win over Buffalo their last time out. Houston has emerged as one of the top scoring teams in Conference USA through the early portion of its schedule, ranking third in the league at 68.9 points per game, close behind conference leader East Carolina (70.37 ppg). The Cougars' defense has also been solid, ranking fifth in the league allowing 63.1 points per contest, while leading the conference in field goal percentage defense at .358 and in blocked shots with 54.
Sophomore forward Courtney Taylor is developing into one of C-USA's top all-around players, leading the league and ranking seventh nationally in rebounding with 11.6 per contest. Additionally, the Crockett, Texas, native is second in the conference in scoring at 16.9 points per game and in block shots with an average of 2.2 per contest.
Classmate Brittney Scott has also been a star on the court for UH, ranking second behind Taylor on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game.
Freshmen guards Roxana Button and Porsche Landry have also led the youth movement and resurgence for the Cougars, with Button averaging double-digit scoring at 11.7 and Porsche chipping in with 9.3 points per game while leading the team with 31 assists on the year.

SERIES HISTORY VS. AKRON
The Cougars and Zips have met only one other time in the series history, with Akron earning an 81-76 over UH in Akron, Ohio, on Dec. 16, 2007.
ABOUT AKRON
The Zips enter Sunday's contest with a 3-7 record this season under third-year head coach Jodi Kest. They have are led on the court by sophomore forward Kara Murphy, who is averaging a team-high 17.4 points per contest, and freshman Kyle Baumgartner, who leads in rebound with an average of 6.7.
