STARKVILLE, Miss. - University of Houston sophomore pitcher Chase Dempsay was named a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-American Third Team selection on Tuesday.
Dempsay led the team with 11 saves last season and become only the fourth player in UH single-season history to record double-digit saves. The Baytown, Texas, native also set UH freshman records in saves and wins (eight). He went 8-3 in 2008 with 49 strikeouts, a 2.53 ERA and a .214 opposing batting average.
A true freshman in 2008, Dempsay was named a Freshman All-America by Rivals.com, Louisville Slugger and Pro-Line Athletic NCBWA and is the only sophomore relief pitcher and one of five Conference USA players to be named to the preseason All-America team.
The Cougars open the 2009 season Feb. 20-22 when they play Kansas State in a weekend, non-conference series at Cougar Field. The series begins at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, continues at 4 p.m. on Feb. 21 and will wrap up at noon on Feb. 22.
