HOUSTON - Putting its home winning streak on the line, the University of Houston women's basketball team will hit the court Sunday at Hofheinz Pavilion when it hosts Cal Poly in a 2 p.m. contest.
This season, the Cougars (5-2) have been stellar on their own hardwood, starting 4-0 at home for the first time since the 2004-05 season, when they started 7-0 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The game will just be another day at the office for head coach Joe Curl after a milestone last Friday when he collected his 300th career victory in the Cougars' 64-44 win over Texas Southern. The UH sideline general continues to chase former Cougar head coach Dot Woodfin, who posted a 175-104 record from 1976-85, for the title of all-time coaching wins leader at UH. Curl has amassed a 162-144 record in 11 years on the Cougar bench and trails Woodfin by just 13 victories.
On the court, UH's sophomore class continues to lead the team as it was second-year guard Brittney Scott who had the hot hand in the win over TSU. The Orange, Texas, native went 6-of-10 from the field and posted a perfect 5-of-5 mark from the charity stripe to pour in a career-high 19 points against the Tigers. Classmate Courtney Taylor also enjoyed a memorable night as she blocked a career-best six shots to go along with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Cal Poly enters the contest with a 5-3 record under 12th year head coach Faith Mimnaugh. The all-time series between UH and Cal Poly is tied at 1-1, but the Mustangs have recent history on their side as they defeated the Cougars 53-48 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., last season.
