Volleyball Takes 3-0 Win Over Tulsa

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team took a 3-0 over Tulsa Friday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center to earn its first win in Conference USA. The Cougars defeated the Golden Hurricane with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-22.
Senior Justine Farmer finished the night with 13 kills and nine digs, while junior Kinsey Cave recorded 10 kills. As a team, the Cougars out-hit Tulsa .323 to .176. With the win, Houston (8-7, 1-2 C-USA) snapped a two game losing streak to open conference play.
In the first set, the Cougars jumped ahead with a 25-21 win in the match. Farmer recorded a game-high five kills in the set as the Cougars matched the Golden Hurricane nearly point for point early on before jumping ahead 10-9. From that point on Houston would never relinquish the lead.
UH would lead by as many as six before Tulsa called its second timeout. The Golden Hurricane came out of the break scoring three straight points forcing head coach Bill Walton to call his first timeout. But Houston responded out of the break with three straight points of its own on the way to the win.
Houston carried that momentum into the second set, holding the early lead before Tulsa tied the set at 10-10. The two teams continued the back and forth battle that had dominated the night's play before Houston used gained a slight 21-19 lead forcing a Tulsa timeout. Out of the break, the Cougars allowed the Golden Hurricane to get within one, 22-21, before holding on for the win.
In the final set of the night, Houston gave up three points to Tulsa to open the set but gradually chipped away at the lead before the Cougars took a 10-9 lead, forcing a Tulsa timeout. Houston was able to build an 18-13 lead out of the break but the Golden Hurricane battled back within one point, 19-18 prompting a timeout from the Cougar bench.
The back and forth action continued, leaving the game tied 22-22, before Houston used a 3-0 run to clinch the win.
UP NEXT
Houston will be back on the court Saturday night at 7pm for a C-USA match against SMU. Following the match, the Cougars will welcome Texas State on Oct. 7 before heading on the road to face East Carolina and Marshall.
