Cougars Prepare for Play at the ITA Regional

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, Thursday to compete in the ITA Southwest Regional, hosted by TCU.
Entering this weekend's matches, senior Lynley Wasson and sophomore Lucy Forward are expected to continue their success seen at the Rice Invitational.
Wasson won her Flight 2 match-up against Texas State's Nyssa Peele, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5), while Forward took the top-flight win, downing Klara Jagosova, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(5).
Both Forward and Wasson finished 1-2 on the weekend at the event as they prepare for the Cougars 2009 campaign, which will begin in the spring.
Senior Vicky Simpson, defeated Saskia Kruse (Texas State) on Friday afternoon, but could not continue her momentum in the No. 5 singles flight, falling on Saturday to Samford's Rebecca Kirven before dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Rice's Rebekka Hanle on Sunday.
In doubles action, the duos of sophomore Laura Ring and senior Jordan McCombs in the No. 1 doubles bracket and freshman Alix Young and Simpson in the No. 3 doubles bracket emerged as winners on Sunday, while the Forward and Wasson combo fell in the No. 2 Doubles slot.
Last season at the ITA Regional, which took place in Lubbock, Texas, the Cougars advanced two doubles teams to the quarterfinals in the consolation draw. The team of Leila Salek and Forward, along with the team of McCombs and Wasson were both eliminated by Louisiana-Lafayette.
Next Up
Houston will return to the John E. Hoff Courts, Nov. 7-9, for the Cougar Fall Classic, followed by their final fall exhibition tournament Nov. 14-15 when they host the Cougar Tennis Reunion Weekend.
