HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team finished its final fall scrimmage against San Jacinto College Saturday at Cougar Field.
It was the second of two scrimmages that were part of the Cougars fall practice season.
Head coach Rayner Noble was pleased with offensive play in the scrimmage after it struggled a bit last weekend.
"We weren't as crisp on the mound this weekend as we were against Alvin, but we made up for it on the offensive side," Noble said. "The thing is we capitalized on their errors with big base hits. I was pleased with what we did offensively today."
With many openings in the Cougar lineup, Noble was pleased with the progress he is seeing from the newcomers on the team.
"We started six freshman in the second scrimmage," Noble said. "They all did an admirable job. I am really pleased with the way they are coming along. All they need is experience and a little bit of strength. They have a chance to really help this ball club."
Junior Zak Presley went 3-for- 3 with two doubles, four RBI and two stolen bases. Sophomore Caleb Ramsey went 4-for-4 with one walk and junior transfer William Kankel hit a home run over the right field wall.
UH will continue its weekday practices, which are set to begin at 2:30 p.m. and are closed to the public, while weekend practices are open to all fans.
The fall practice schedule will culminate on Nov. 8 when the 2008 Cougar Baseball team receives their 2008 Conference USA Championship rings and will be honored at the Houston football game against Tulane.
The Cougars open the 2009 season on Feb. 20-22 when they host Kansas State in a weekend, non-conference series at Cougar Field. The series begins at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, continues at 4 p.m. on Feb. 21 and will wrap up at noon on Feb. 22.
