HOUSTON, Texas - Despite postponing its original season opener that was slated for 10 am, the University of Houston women's tennis team hit the courts for its scheduled 2 pm match with Tyler Junior College and walked away with an impressive 7-0 whitewashing.
The Cougars dominated at all six singles spots as well as the three doubles positions, winning in straight sets in all nine match-ups. Only one match needed a tiebreaker in the winning effort.
"We could tell it was the first match of the season because we were quite nervous during singles play," said UH head coach John Severance. "But, we had solid doubles play, and we are happy where we are right now as a team. We're in a solid spot."
In her collegiate debut freshman Lucy Forward took the #1 singles by knocking off TJC's Ashley Irvin , 6-2, 6-4, and then she teamed with another freshman, Isabella Glinska, to down Irvin and her doubles partner, Priscilla Villemond, 8-2.
Leila Salek, one of only two seniors on this year's squad, took the #2 singles match with an overpowering 6-3, 6-3, verdict over Villemond. At #3 doubles Salek paired with freshman newcomer Joanna Kacprzyk to blitz Iris Rendon and Kelly Rittenhouse, 8-1.
At #3 singles junior Lynley Wasson took down Ashley Longoria, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), while sophomore Neila Starratt captured #4 singles with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Sureena Weir. Kaprzyk was the winner at #5, taking down Rendon, 6-2, 7-5, and junior Vicky Simpson completed the singles sweep by making quick work of Rittenhouse, 6-1, 6-0.
Wasson and junior Jordan McCombs were the winners at #2 doubles, taking down Longoria and Ware, 8-3.
The Cougars return to the court on Saturday, February 2, when they travel to College Station to face #26-ranked Texas A&M at 5 pm.
