Track and Field Opens 2008 Indoor Season Saturday

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston track and field team opens the 2008 indoor season when the Cougars host the Houston Indoor Opener on Jan. 12.
The meet is set to begin with the field events at 8 am and the running events will start at 12:30 pm.
A list of teams competing in the Opener include, Jackson State (women only), Lamar, Mississippi Valley State (women only), Northwood, Prairie View A&M, St. Ambrose, Texas, Texas Lutheran (women only), Texas Southern, Texas State, Tulane (women only), UAB (women only) and UTSA.
The Cougars are coming off an impressive 2007 season that saw the men's team capture the 2007 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field team championship trophy and the women finish third but were only nine points from the title.

A Look at the Schedule
The Houston Indoor Opener is the first of six meets the Cougars will host this season. Next weekend Houston will host the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet and head to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Arkansas Invitational (Jan. 25-26).
The Cougars will open February with the Houston Indoor Invitational and Multis Feb. 1-2) and the Bayou City Classic (Feb. 8). A return trip to Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational will be on Feb. 16. Houston will host their final regular season meet on Feb. 16 with the UH All-Comers Meet before hosting the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championship on Feb. 29-March 1.
The postseason will begin on March 7-8 at the Iowa State Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa and the NCAA Indoor Championships will be March 15-16 in Fayetteville.
Honoring Our Champions
The Cougars will kick off the 2008 season with an awards banquet on Jan. 11. The team will honor their conference champions with a dinner at 6pm in the O'Quinn Great Hall at the Athletics Alumni Center.
