HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team halted a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Houston Baptist, Tuesday night on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) scored the game-winner in the 30th minute off a penalty kick. Lynn Baker (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS) was taken down in the box by HBU `keeper Michelle Rich, setting up the PK opportunity. Rodriguez stepped up and sent the ball to the right of Rich for her second goal of the season.
The Cougars (4-2-1) took a physical match in the first-ever meeting between the local rivals. The match featured a combined 39 fouls. HBU (5-4) had its two-game winning streak snapped by UH.
Entering the match UH had not scored in 290 minutes. Nikki Echeverria (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) put a halt to that in the 15th minute after a pass from Baker found her open on the right side of the box. Echeverria took one dribble and sent the ball past Rich.
HBU answered back in the 26th minute when Isla Cameron knocked home a the equalizer past Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) off a corner kick from Shannon Hall. Hall's corner ended up at the feet of Cristina Nunez who sent it to the feet of Cameron.
Scott made four saves on the night and earned the win. She needs four victories to tie UH's all-time goalkeeper wins record, held by Michelle Denomme', with 17 wins.
The Cougars got an insurance goal from freshman Izzy Babb (Hickory Creek, Texas/Lewisville HS) in the 76th minute. Babb's goal, the first of her career, came in her second game back after recovering from multiple knee surgeries. Lauri Byrne (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll HS) played the ball up to Echeverria who faked out Rich and found an open Babb who buried it in the back of the net.
Houston continues a three-match homestand against UTSA at 7 p.m. CDT Friday and closes out the weekend with TCU at 1 p.m. Sunday. The UH-TCU match will be aired nationally by CSTV on a tape-delayed basis.
