Volleyball Win Streak Hits Two at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Stephen F. Austin Friday night in their second match of the Houston Tournament. The Cougars won in five games with scores of 30-32, 24-30, 31-29, 30-25, 15-3 at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Multiple players stepped up to give the Cougars (5-6, 1-0) their second straight win. Junior Justine Farmer recorded a double-double with 29 kills and 17 digs. Freshmen Lucy Charuk and Robin Fitzgerald added 21 kills and 39 assists, respectively. In just her fourth match of the season, junior Kelsey King had 26 assists.
The win gives the Cougars a 16-3 lead in the all-time series and a 4-2 advantage in the Bill Walton era.
The match started off in favor of the Ladyjacks 2-0 but Houston rebounded in game three jumping out to an early 13-9 lead before SFA called a timeout. UH would respond by scoring five of the next six points. The Ladyjacks continued to battle but the Cougars were able to hold them off for the win.
In game four, Houston out hit SFA .318 to .157 behind Farmer's nine kills. Farmer earned her fifth kill of the game to give the Cougars a 25-21 advantage and it would be all Houston's game until the end. Houston would go on to close out the game on a 10-0 run to force game five.
Game five was the Cougar's game. After the Ladyjack's tied the game at 1-1, Houston was off scoring the next 10 points on their way to a 15-3 win.
Houston will look to extend their winning streak to three when they take on Wake Forest Saturday at 7pm to conclude the Houston Tournament. Prior to the Houston match Wake Forest will play SFA at noon and Rice will play SFA at 5 pm.
