HOUSTON - The third week of Cougar preseason practice came to an end this afternoon with a spirited workout outside on the UH Practice Fields. Houston then came inside the air-conditioned Yeoman Field House and took part in the annual Fan Appreciation Day with Cougar fans and alumni.
The Cougars will enjoy a day off on Saturday before returning to practice on Sunday afternoon in preparation for the season opener at Oregon on September 1.
"We had a lot of energy," said UH head coach Art Briles. "(We had) four tough days in a row. Our leaders really stepped up and brought a lot of energy to the workout. It was a good, productive day, and we covered every special teams phase.
"We're loaded up and ready. The car is loaded, it is full of gas, and we're fixing to put it on the floor and drive."
At least 500 Cougar fans were in attendance at Fan Appreciation Day, where the band, Cougar cheerleaders and Cougar Dolls provided entertainment for those in the Yeoman Field House. Fans were treated to free pizza and cold drinks, and we able to play a variety of games on the Astroturf inside the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Briles was thankful for the faithful who attended the meet-and-greet with the 2007 Cougar squad.
"(The crowd was) outstanding," commented the 2006 Conference USA Coach of the Year. "It was really heart-warming. It is a great bunch of people.
"It makes us more proud to be Houston Cougars. We appreciate all their support."
